Real Solutions Coalition

The mission of the Real Solutions Coalition is to advocate locally for improved services and programs to address the root causes of recidivism, elevate the voices of those impacted by the criminal justice system and reduce the need for incarceration.

The Real Solutions Coalition was formed in response to a 2020 plan proposed by the Jackson County Board of Commissioners that would create a new separate and permanent taxing district and raise county property taxes by more than 40% in order to fund a new and supersized jail. Community members in collaboration with the RAC led an effective opposition campaign, and voters overwhelming voted against the plan.

Today, the Real Solutions Coalition is monitoring the commission and preparing to respond if another plan is put forward. The coalition is also examining options for criminal justice reform in the Rogue Valley.

Housing Policy

One of the critical policy wins that the RAC community has contributed to was Senate Bill 608, a landmark renter’s rights bill passed in 2019. Dozens of renters testified to legislators in Salem and shared personal stories about the housing challenges that renters face in Southern Oregon, and advocated for greater protections.

Today, as we recover from overlapping disasters, COVID-19 at the 2020 Alameda Fires, housing access and affordability have grown into a full scale crisis in Jackson and Josephine County. We know that solutions to the housing crisis are possible and that they must stem from and be rooted in community voice. Join us as we organize around affordable and accessible housing policy locally and statewide.

RAC Housing Spectrum2.png

This graphic encompasses the range of approaches the RAC believes are needed in order to address the multi-faceted housing crisis that we are facing here in Southern Oregon. The RAC is involved in some pieces of this work and recognizes the critical work that our partners are doing in meeting other needs outlined here.
